Baby Showers – Fun Games

Baby shower games happen only once in a while and are a great occasion for having fun. After all, a baby shower is sort of a welcome party for the bundle of joy and fun himself or herself, the soon-to-be-born baby. Aside from the moms-to-be, close friends and relatives like grandparents and godparents make themselves available for such an occasion. And how else can one brighten up the party but play group games? People enjoy playing games. Games give people occasion to relate to others and develop friendships among themselves. Baby shower games are also a way of paying homage to the mother for bearing the child.

Here are some of the more common baby shower games and the brief descriptions of how they are played:

Sing it, baby!

Participants position themselves into a round formation. They may either stand up or sit down. When his or her turn comes, each participant will sing several lines from a song that contains the word “baby”. Somebody from the group of participants will have to be designated as starter. The next player to his or her right will have ten seconds to do the same after the starter has finished singing. The next player to the right follows until only one person is left who is able to sing a “baby” song. A song cannot be repeated. Those who repeat a song and those who cannot sing a “baby” song within ten seconds when their turn comes boot themselves out of the game.

Measuring up mommy

The mom-to-be becomes the center of attention in this game. A facilitator will need some two rolls of sanitary tissue for this game. Players will be asked to guess the size of mommy’s girth with the use of the tissue. They will cut the tissue to a length of the paper which they think will approximate the size of mommy’s round belly. Each player will then wrap around mommy’s belly with the tissue he or she cut to determine the winner. The one whose guess is closest to the actual belly size wins it.

Looking at you, kid!

It is fun looking at pictures taken when we were toddlers, right? That is what this game is all about. To get this going, those who are attending the party must be asked earlier (that is, before they come to attend the party itself) to bring with them pictures of themselves when they were kids. The more amusing the pictures look, the better. Upon arrival of participants, party hosts will collect the pictures and assign numbers to them. At game time, the pictures will be laid on a table and each participant given paper and pen. The task is to identify or recognize as much picture as one can by writing the identities on the paper. The participant who gets to identify correctly the most number of kids wins the game.

Don’t say baby

This game will refrain oneself (in the spirit of fun) from saying the word “baby”. This can be tough considering that the event is called baby shower. Diaper pins are given to participants at their arrival for the baby shower. Every time a participant says or mentions the word “baby” a pin is taken away from his or her possession. The participant who gets to retain the greatest number of pins when the party ends collects a prize.

Baby truth or dare

This is a question and answer game. Somebody will be asked to prepare true-or-false trivia questions about babies in general. As the baby shower game gets going, participants will be asked in random to answer the trivia questions. Those who respond or answer the questions correctly will win a prize while those who do not will be dared to do anything he or she likes for everyone’s entertainment.

The seventh gift

This game is inspired by the single lady who grabs the wedding bouquet lobbed by the bride after the wedding rite. Belief has it that that lady will come to be the next bride. Here, the baby shower game partakes of somewhat similar fable-like turn when the gifts are unwrapped. The lady who gave the seventh gift that gets unwrapped is tossed to become the next woman on the family way. Here is a tip: Make sure that the seventh gift is not “planted” so as to make it truly fun and exciting.

Dig out the pins

Players scramble to fish out diaper pins from a big bowl full of uncooked rice. The game runs for two minutes. The player who collects the greatest number of pins wins the game.

Making a Difference One Bottom at a Time

With the concern about climate change, deforestation, toxic chemicals and a whole host of other environmental issues, isn’t it time we start to make a difference in our lives and the lives of our families. One of the biggest impacts on our environment is do to our most precious possessions, our babies. Diapering makes a huge impact on our environment. Both disposables and cloth diaper effect the world around us in different ways. So let us compare disposable and cloth diapers.

Disposable diapers are the third most common product in landfills today. One baby will contribute 1 ton of waste to the landfill. Many cities are having shortages of places to put there trash. No one wants a landfill in there neighborhood. In fact, Hawaii is running out of space for there trash. Honolulu has only one landfill remaining. Kauai’s only landfill is near capacity. A report titled Municipal Solid Waste in the United States: 2005 Facts and Figures showed that disposable diapers accounted for 3.6 million tons of waste and 1.5% of the total waste generation for that year. The report specifically mentioned that no significant recycling or composting of disposable diapers was identified in 2006. It takes up to 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose. There are some one time use diapers that claim to be biodegradable, but for them to degrade they must be exposed to air and sunlight. This is highly unlikely to occur in a landfill. The manufacture of disposable diapers requires 80,000 pounds of plastic and 200,000 trees in a year just for the U.S. alone.

The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission has received numerous complaints about single-use diapers. These include the DEATH of babies from suffocation and asphyxiation by the wood pulp stuffing, the plastic shell or the tape tabs. Putting a non-breathable synthetic next to your baby’s most sensitive and most intimate body area is also extremely uncomfortable. Single-use diapers are just fancy trash bags with a lining. Would you give your baby a plastic bag and say good-night? Your baby is in danger of suffocation when single-use diapers are left within reach. Your baby will be in diapers 24 hours a day for up to 3 years and deserves to be safe and comfortable. Many doctors claim there is a rise in infections, especially in baby girls, as parents tend to change single-use diapers much less often than cloth diapers. Single-use diapers don’t breathe well and don’t feel wet, increasing diaper rash as heat and moisture provide an excellent medium for bacterial growth.

The manufacturing of one time use diapers, produce many harmful chemicals that are released into the environment. In Taylor County, Florida the Fenholloway River had been polluted by effluent from Proctor and Gamble’s Buckeye pulp mill, which produces pulp for such products as Pampers® and Luvs® disposable diapers, Attends® incontinence pads, and Always sanitary napkins. A 1990 Environmental Protection Agency study that showed the Fenholloway had dioxin levels 1,900 times higher than what the agency considers an acceptable risk. There are many harmful chemicals in disposable diapers as well. The Rely® tampon, introduced in 1975 was removed from the marketplace because of the sometimes fatal Toxic Shock Syndrome associated with its use. These super-absorbent crystals are the same ones now being used in single-use diapers! What you put on your baby’s skin does make a difference. The following is an excerpt from the Pittman Post, a newsletter for parents and child-care providers: “Newborn infants are exposed to an average of fifty (50) different environmental chemicals through the use of skin products, according to a recent study published in Clinical Pediatrics. Because newborn skin has a poorly developed outer layer, chemicals are much more easily absorbed when compared to adult skin. This means a much greater risk of chemical poisoning. The authors believe that all over-the-counter skin products should be studied extensively for their possible hazards.”

Human waste in the land fills is another big problem facing us today. Not since the Middle-Ages has there been so much human waste in our garbage. There is NO safe way to dispose of single-use diapers. Flushing them down the toilet causes 95% of clogged sewer lines in the US, and creates 43,000 tons of extra sludge per year. Most people simply toss these soiled single-use diapers into household, hospital or roadside garbage. This adds 84 million pounds of raw fecal matter to our environment per year. Raw sewage is then dumped in landfill sites, breeding viruses and bacteria. As many as 100 viruses can survive in soiled diapers for up to two weeks, including live polio virus excreted by recently-vaccinated babies. According to Environment Canada, once in landfill sites – which are not designed to handle human waste – single-use diapers threaten the health of sanitary workers, water supplies and our wildlife.

Cloth diapers are a much better alternative to the diapering question. There is virtually no impact on our landfills. Cloth diapers can be used many times and for more than one child. They can be recycled and used as rags, burp cloths and a variety of different things. There is no end to what someone can come up with for other purposes for cloth diapers.

Many cloth diapers are organic and use no harmful chemicals in the process of manufacturing. It is comforting to know that what is against your babies skin does not have some invisible threat to there health. The natural fibers are breathable and do not cause overheating problems. Many doctors are concerned about infertility problems in males, do to improper development of the testicles, caused by over heating inside disposable diapers.

Now even if the carbon footprint is the same between cloth and disposable diapers, there is no comparison between the toxic chemicals and the waste produced by disposables. One of the problems today is everyone is focused on the carbon footprint, and ignore all the other factors such as chemicals produced and used to create these products. Let’s not get caught up in the buzz words and forget about everything else. Now when you go to make your next purchase on baby diapers you have a lot of choices to make, but remember that the choice that you make affects a very little person who has no voice of their own.

Baby Yeast Infection

Not only can adults with skin folds get a yeast infection, but so can those wondrously-pinchable chunky babies and toddlers. When working as a toddler teacher, I had come across both sexes of children with yeast infections. One of my toddler girls had a huge rash under her armpit. When I pointed this out to her mother, she was brought to the doctor that same day. The following morning, her mother came to us with a cream – it was a cream to kill the yeast infection under her armpit! It is truly distressing to have a child who cannot talk, eventually come down with a yeast infection.

On a baby, the only couple of signs you get from a girl is just as unnerving to the child as to the mother. If your daughter cries every time she urinates into her diaper, and has a lot of redness and swelling in her vaginal area, then it may be time to take her to the pediatrician. I also had a toddler boy end up with a yeast infection. This child happened to have his foreskin attached to his penis still. If you do not know, many children nowadays happen to have the foreskin removed within a few days after birth – whether for sanitary purposes or religious reasons.

If the foreskin is not pulled back from the head of the penis and cleaned properly, then a yeast infection can occur. One this child, the recurrent yeast infections became so much that his parents finally decided to put the child through surgery (at 21 months of age) to have the foreskin removed. Now, this does not mean that an uncircumcised boy will always get yeast infections, but the parents do need to make sure that they are properly cleaning the area. This also means that the child must be taught to do this as a young man, or, as an adult, that man can get a yeast infection around the head of his penis.

Infants can also be susceptible to a form of yeast infection in the mouth, called thrush. Thrush is seen in the mouth a small, white patches on the insides of the cheeks, and the roof of an infant’s mouth. It is normally painless, but can become uncomfortable enough for an infant to refuse to breastfeed. That being said, a mother can contract a yeast infection in her breasts if her infant has had thrush. Both the infant and the mother would need to be treated for the infection.

On the mother, small red or white patches can show on the breast, as well as red or purple discolored nipples. During breastfeeding, the mother may experience shooting pain in the breast, or even a more sensitized nipple area. Many antibiotics to treat yeast infections can be passed through breast milk, so doctors truly need to exhibit caution when treating this type of infection. Some mothers swear by eating more yogurts that contains good bacteria, and lessening consumption of yeasty foods.
